Guinness World Record - ITS OURS!
The Morris Rugby Corporation officially broke the record for the largest touch/mini/tag rugby tournament in the world.

Congratulations to everyone, especially to KJ, for following this through for the past 6 months. Morris Rugby now has a Guinness Book of Records: World Record. The official wording is:

Largest touch/mini/tag/rugby tournament is the 2009 Morris Youth American Flag Rugby Festival organized by The Morris Rugby Corp and was contested by 95 teams totaling 832 players in Chester, New Jersey, United States on 25 July 2009.

The previous record was documented on March 19, 2008 at the Tag Rugby Festival hosted by Cheltenham Spa School Sport Partnership, which was contested by 48 teams totaling 487 players at Newlands Park, Cheltenham, United Kingdom.

In addition to breaking the record, this past year marked the 10th American Flag Rugby Youth Festival sponsored by the Morris Rugby Corporation. the games were played on 17 lush grass fields.

Participants were from the eight Morris Rugby Sponsored teams: Denville Dawgs, Montville Wanderers, Long Valley Wolfpack, Parsippany Panthers, Black River Renegades, Byram Bruins and Mine Hill Tigers’, three Union County teams: Union County Mudturle Rugby Club, Westfield Blue Devils, Cranford and Berkley Heights Rugby Club and Bergen County’s Ridgewood Rugby Club and the Doylestown, Pennsylvania Rugby Club.

American Flag Rugby was developed by Morris Rugby. In this non-contact game, kids play a version of sevens rugby where the defense removes the ball carrier’s Velcro flag instead of creating a tackle situation.

The game is co-ed in four age groups ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade. The game develops as the players’ skill levels increase. The youngest groups focus more on fun and rugby concepts. The groups progress to passing and flat defense and move on to a ruck-like simulation for the oldest group. All age groups have a slow introduction to scrums and line outs and convert tries using drop kicks.
